Quick Shot
I used to have a curse. Any magazines that accepted my stories went belly-up faster than you can say, âhogwash.â This story probably killed Eldritch Tales. I say probably because Crispin Burnham (the editor) soon accepted a second story from me called âLengthwise.â So itâs possible that second story was the culprit. Regardless, there were no more issues of that fine magazine.
SHE AIN'T READY FOR MY LOVIN'
Linda was a hot lookin' bitch out there on the dance floor. Her body twisted and shook to the hard-driving rhythm. Hank sipped his beer and nudged me with his elbow. âHey, Jake, go get her, buddy. She's ripe.â
âDon't push me,â I said slamming down my brew. âI ain't ready to make my move yet.â The bar was crowded tonight--it always was on Fridays. The band played mostly fifties songsâBuddy Holly, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, then they'd toss in a couple of sixties tunes to spice things up. Linda danced to all of them--every song, she'd shake it all night. None of the guys could keep up with her.
âShit,â Hank said. âGirl like that'd spit in your face if you asked her to dance.â
We'd done had this conversation some six times already tonight. Several times last week, too. It always went the same. Hank would try and egg me on, and I'd hem-haw my way out of the situation. âShe's with Joe tonight.â
âThat don't mean nothin',â Hank said. âShe started off with Billy Ray over there. Got herself a regular corral of ol' boys just itchin' to jump her bones. She's probably had every one of them at least twice.â
âShe ain't had the best,â I said.
âShit, my wife'd kill me if I said two words to the ol' gal.â
I grinned. âShe ain't had me.â
âShe don't want you.â
âAfter she's had me, those other guys will never cross her mind again. She'll be faithful.â
âAnd my farts don't stink,â Hank said. âBuy me another beer.â
So we watched her dance like we always did. She was a damn fine dancer. Set the floor on fire. When the song ended, the lead singer pushed the microphone back into its holder. âWe're about ready to pack it in, folks. Thanks for coming out and drive safely on the way home.â He said something to the band, and then nodded. âThis last song is called 'Riders on the Storm', sing it with me.â
Hank caught himself a nice buzz and leaned over to ask his last question of the night. I guess it was our little ritual. âWhy don't you make a play for her, Jake?â
âTiming's off,â I said. âShe ain't ready for my lovin' tonight.â
âThen who is?â
I looked around the barroom. My eyes focused on a cute blonde perched in the back corner looking lonely. âHer,â I said and pushed away from our table to approach her.
Her name was Pamela, but she went by Suzy and no, I didn't ask why. Maybe she liked Creedence. âWhy are you sitting back here all alone?â I asked.
She looked up at me with eyes the color of the deep blue sea.
